The Passion of Christ

Synopsis of a contraversial film

Directed and co-written by Mel Gibson, one of Hollywood's most respected actors and directors, The Passion of the Christ dramatically and graphically captures the last 12 hours of Christ's life on Earth, based on the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The film - a project in which Gibson invested 12 years of his life and $25 million of his own funds - became the Oscar-winning actor's unique passion as he researched the details of the story that, in his words, "heals me". The opening date in the UK is 25 March.

Mel Gibson not only directed the film but, unknown to most people, is actually in the film, as well. It is a close-up of his arm bringing the hammer down on the nail being driven into Jesus' hand. He asked to do this scene, wanting to express his conviction that it was his sin that nailed our Savior to the cross.

Agape involvement

Roger Vann of Agape has ended up in the middle of Icon's European distribution plans for The Passion this spring, having been given the responsibility of finding Christian language translation specialists in most of the countries in W. Europe to check the subtitle translation work being done by someone contracted by the national film distributor.

In a recent Variety interview (the film industry magazine), Gibson said, "My company is going to ride close herd on the subtitling abroad to make sure the translations were in sync with the original script." Agape worldwide is honored to be the organisation given the responsibility. (The film is being released in 38 Languages)
